LHS GRADUATE IN NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE

June 27, 2024

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, the Town of Limon will be celebrating Independence Day at the LHS Football Field, complete with fireworks and special guests, the 101st Army Band, under the direction of Commander McCallum! Various ensembles within the band will begin their concert(s) at 6:00 pm, so bring your lawn chairs and insect repellent.

2009 LHS graduate and valedictorian, Kelsie McCallum, enlisted in the 101st Army Band in 2010 as a French horn and piano player. She graduated from Warrant Officer Candidate School in 2022 and was awarded the CW5 Frank T. Vaughn Leadership Award out of approximately 2,300 Warrant Office Candidates to include regular Army as well. She is the very first Army National Guardsman/Army from Colorado to bring home this honor. Therefore, she has been awarded the privilege of carrying a saber as a symbol of her accomplishment. (However, band members sitting on the first row have suggested she NOT use it to conduct!)

Commander McCallum is also the first woman officer to lead the Colorado National Guard Band, as well as by far the youngest officer to do so.

In addition to her duties with the 101st, she is a member of the Military Funeral Honors Team and has assisted with several state activation missions. Ms. McCallum teaches K-5 elementary music in District D20 in Colorado Springs, and she recently graduated with her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. In September, she will be celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with her husband, Kyle Gruenhagen. Kelsie was a student in Mr. Greg Scherrer’s bands who gave her great encouragement and support during all her years in the Limon bands. Her proud parents are Mike and Cindy McCallum of Limon.

Everyone is invited to this free performance, and the bands will be very appreciative of your support. You’ll be treated to all kinds of music, including Rock, Country, and Dixieland style music.
